Cleaning Your Sink with Baking Soda - A Natural, Inexpensive Solution

Tired of staring at that stained, grimy sink? Don't reach for harsh chemicals - baking soda is a natural, inexpensive way to make your sink sparkle.

Baking soda is a versatile cleaning product found in most kitchens. It's acidic properties dissolve residue while its abrasiveness scrubs away grime. Best of all, it's non-toxic and environmentally friendly.

Here's how to use baking soda to clean your sink and make it look brand new:

Why Baking Soda Works

Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is a mildly alkaline powder that's activated when mixed with water. Here's why it's effective:

  • Abrasive texture scrubs away stubborn gunk and residue
  • Dissolves grease, oils, and other grimy buildup
  • Deodorizes by neutralizing musty or unpleasant odors
  • Non-toxic and safe for the environment
  • Gentle on skin
  • Inexpensive and readily available

Baking soda is versatile enough to clean stainless steel, porcelain, ceramic, enamel, and plastic sinks. Its abrasive action lifts dirt from the surface while the fizzing effect of the soda dissolves away grease and buildup.

Removing Stains and Grime

Over time, your sink endures plenty of abuse. From food stains to mineral deposits left behind from water, grungy buildup accumulates. Baking soda to the rescue!

Here are some common stains and grime baking soda can tackle:

  • Tea or coffee stains - These can leave behind a stubborn brown ring. Make a paste with baking soda and scrub to remove.
  • Water spots or mineral deposits - Hard water can leave white lime and calcium spots. Use a baking soda paste or mix baking soda with vinegar to dissolve minerals.
  • Rust stains - For stainless steel sinks with rust spots, rub baking soda on the area and rinse well. For enameled sinks, make a paste.
  • Drain odors - Eliminate funky smells from your drain by pouring 1/2 cup baking soda down the drain followed by vinegar. Let fizz, then rinse with hot water.
  • Soap scum - That filmy residue can build up, especially on porcelain sinks. Make a paste with baking soda and scrub that soap scum away.
  • Food stains - Sauces, juices, grease - you name it. Make a baking soda paste and say goodbye to those pesky food stains.

Using Baking Soda for a Deep Clean

Now let's tackle that dirty sink with baking soda and make it shine! Here are two methods:

Everyday Cleaning

For routine cleaning, simple sprinkle baking soda directly onto the sink basin. Use a damp sponge or cloth to scrub the baking soda over the surface of the sink. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

Deep Cleaning

For a deeper clean, make a paste by mixing 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water. Using a sponge, cloth, or scrub brush, apply the paste to the sink. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes before scrubbing and rinsing. For tougher stains, allow the paste to sit longer before scrubbing.

  • Wear gloves to protect hands from grime

Neighborhood rockstars

We had an issue in my neighborhood where a water main pipe burst, leaving a giant mess of a leak spewing into the street. We called numerous plumbing companies who all said they couldn't get out in a timely manner. RooterPlus! said no problem, we'll be out asap.Josh came out, assessed the situation and said he had to go get some more supplies. He came back with the necessary supplies and got to work. And he worked and worked and worked from 6pm until 4:30 am! He had to call in reinforcements (Josh 2) and they worked hard as a team to repair the issue. Then they came back out only 5 hours later to put the finishing touches on the job.I think I speak for the entire neighborhood when we say THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for being absolute rockstars and getting our neighborhood back up and running.
